google maps

it's april 2025. i'm sitting at my dining room table on a rainy night at 10:40 pm, struggling over piles of make-up math problems.

but

on google maps, there is a picture of my childhood home. it's a bright sunny day in september 2011 and my family car is parked in the driveway and i am inside it

because as the google maps driver drove by the side door of that little white minivan was opened and a family of five-- because in a little less than a month, i'd get to hold my very first sister for the first time-- was about to get out.

now, i can't remember what we were doing on that bright, sunny day, in september 2011.

i imagine i was about to get out of the car and run to my next-door-neighbors' house (because they were my first and dearest friends) to ask if they could play one of our countless games of pretend.

whatever i was doing, i certainly wasn't imagining that, i'd be sitting in a completely different house thirteen years later, at my dining room table on a rainy night at 10:40 pm, struggling over piles of make-up math problems.

sometimes i get sad when i remember my childhood home.

i can't think about it, can't drive past it, (because i still live in the same city), can't remember it at all without bursting into tears. (and i'm not a crier.)

so much has changed. even the house itself has changed. the yellow siding is faded and the white stoop is stained and the driveway pavement is cracked and grass grows in the gaps.

my mother's beautiful front garden is completely overgrown. the red brick borders have been ripped out, the peony bush now completely covers the picture window for want of pruning, and everything but the daylilies has been completely choked out by tall, hardy grass.

but

the lilies of the valley still grow in their alcove under the peony

and

the door is still bright red. (i remember the day my dad painted it.)

and

the stump under the pine tree grotto-- the stump that was so many tables and cauldrons and bookstands-- is still there. (and i hope the periwinkles are too.)

and
